Banjara (Lambani) embroidery originates from the nomadic Lambani community across Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Practiced for generations, it serves as a form of cultural expression, reflecting identity and storytelling through textiles. Entirely hand-embroidered, the craft involves layering stitches, appliqué, and embellishments to create dense surfaces, often covering the base fabric almost entirely. Known for its bold geometric motifs arranged in rhythmic, grid-like compositions, the embroidery features triangles, diamonds, squares, and stepped borders, often inspired by traditional muggu (South Indian rangoli) designs. Mirrors, coins, shells, and metal accents are intricately incorporated, enriching the visual character of the embroidery. While the craft has seen periods of decline, ongoing revival efforts are adapting it for contemporary and wider audiences. Today, these techniques continue to evolve across clothing, accessories, and home décor, sustaining the craft and supporting the livelihoods of Banjara women.
