Naqashi (Kashmir)
Kashmiri Paper Maché is a centuries-old craft introduced by Persian artisans and Sufi saints to the Kashmir Valley during the 14th and 15th centuries.
The art form combines Sakhtsazi (the creation of objects from paper pulp) with Naqashi (intricate hand-painting and decoration). Renowned for its fine brushwork, vibrant colours, and meticulous detailing, each piece is carefully painted by hand using traditional techniques passed down through generations.
Influenced by Kashmir's natural landscape, motifs include Chinar leaves, Lotus, Gul-e-Hazara (a thousand-petalled flower), Badam (almond/paisley), Bulbul (nightingale birds), Gul-andar-Gul (flower within a flower) along with jungle scenes and Mughal-inspired gardens and arabesques.
Artisans layer colours gradually, adding delicate outlines, shading, and ornamental details before finishing each piece with gold accents and a protective lacquer coating.
While traditionally seen on decorative objects, Paper Maché art today finds expression in jewellery, accessories, and keepsakes. By adapting centuries-old techniques to modern designs, artisans ensure the craft remains relevant while preserving its cultural essence.
